Spider Veins

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are dilated capillaries that are visible through the surface of your skin. They get their name from their weblike appearance. Spider veins can be red, blue, or purple in appearance, and they usually develop on your legs or face.

To understand how spider veins occur, think about how your circulatory system works. Your capillaries are the smallest of your body’s blood vessels. They have a series of tiny valves to keep your blood moving in one direction.

Occasionally, those valves malfunction. That causes blood to back up within the capillary, swelling the vessel walls. When this occurs close to the surface of your skin, the distended capillaries become visible, creating the spider-web look characteristic of spider veins.

What causes spider veins?

There are numerous factors that increase your risk of developing spider veins. Researchers believe there is a genetic component, so if a close family member has spider veins, you might develop them, as well. Additional causes include:

  • Obesity
  • History of blood clots
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Birth control pills
  • Pregnancy
  • Occupations that require extended periods of standing

Spider veins aren’t painful, and they aren’t dangerous. It is because they can mar the appearance of the skin that many men and women seek treatment.

What is the treatment for spider veins?

At Rejuv by Stages, laser therapy is the preferred treatment for spider veins. The process works by directing the laser to the area where distended veins are visible through your skin. The laser light is absorbed by the darkened blood in your spider veins.

That laser light is converted into heat, which damages the walls of the targeted capillaries. Those capillaries are destroyed and can no longer hold or move blood. The accumulated blood and damaged blood vessels are processed and eliminated from your body.

Don’t be concerned about losing this portion of your capillary system. Once the blood began to pool in those vessels, your body began redirecting blood to nearby healthy capillaries. Spider-vein treatment has no negative effect on your circulatory system and is a safe and effective process.
